Based on a series of interviews recorded with the artist in New York and Maine, this film explores Heliker’s life and work, and includes reminiscences with contemporaries Lou Harrison and William Maxwell. A contemporary individualist who was never associated with any particular school, Heliker’s work has been guided by what critic Jed Perl has called an “inner compass of certainty.” This intimate portrait offers a rare and fascinating insight into the creative process of an artist who was still working in his ninth decade. John Heliker passed away in 2000.
